A Step-By-Step Guide To Herb Potting

A Step-By-Step Guide To Herb Potting

Make sure to read "Consider This Before Herb Potting" to help you find the perfect place for your pots. For a list of tools needed + purchase links, check out "Tools For Outdoor Herb Potting".

  1. Drill at least 3 holes in the bottom of your planter. This will help with drainage, keep your pots from developing mold and mildew and help your herbs to avoid root rot.
  2. Place your plater on the cement blocks in your chosen spot. This keeps the wooden planter from sitting in drained water.
  3. Cover the bottom of the planter with river rocks. This is another added step to ensure that excess water can successfully drain out.
  4. Add in a layer of potting soil and using your hands, mix it until the rocks are dispersed throughout the soil. Add more potting soil on top, until the container is about 1/3 full.
  5. Add in a layer of garden soil and use your hands to mix. Then finish it off with one more layer of potting soil.
  6. Plant your herbs according to the amount of space and depth that they need. This information can generally be found on the tag when you purchase it.
  7. Water generously. Make sure that soil says moist for the first 2-3 weeks of watering. You don't want the seedlings to dry out before they take root.
  8. Cover with chicken wire (to keep out the squirrels and birds) and watch your herbs grow!
